EXCURSIONS IN KRETINGA

 

Inside Kretinga‘s 5 Monasteries

During the excursion, we will visit one monastery (for monks) and four convents (for nuns). Depending on their availability, we will meet with monks and nuns of different congregations. We will learn how each of the monasteries came into being and about everyday monastic life. The nuns will discuss their vocation, duties and the works they perform.

In the footsteps of the monks and nuns

During the excursion, we will visit the Church of the Annunciation of the Lord to the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, the steeple, the inner courtyard of the friary, the Chapel of the Martyrs, the crypt of the church‘s patrons, the Crypt of the Martyrs and the Lourdes grotto. Participants in the excursion will find out how the friary and the church came into being, what miracles are attributed to the Altar of Saint Anthony, what the everyday routine of the friars is like, and even what kind of people have been laid to eternal rest in the church‘s crypts.

One people‘s history

During the excursion, we will visit sites related to the life of Kretinga‘s Jews. We will find out where the Jewish optician‘s office, shops, doctor‘s office, petrol station, ritual bath (mikveh) and religious school had been. We will walk the streets in which there had been the synagogue, factories and workshops, a cosmetologist‘s office, a shelter, a mill and the market square.

Kretinga underground: if only these walls could speak

During the excursion, we will visit the crypts of the Kretinga church, the basement of Saint Anthony‘s Residence Hall and the mausoleum of the chapel of the Tiškevičius family. In the crypt of the Kretinga church, we will see the sarcophagi of the Chodkevičius family and the place where those who died during the war with the Swedes were buried. In the basement of Saint Anthony‘s Residence Hall, we will visit the cells in which those tortured by the Soviet NKVD were held, and we will see a well used for torture. In the chapel of the Tiškevičius family, we will see the family‘s sarcophagi and hear about key moments in their lives.
